Many students think they have plenty of time if their goal is to travel in February, but the full process from choosing a course to receiving the visa takes longer than it seems. This guide shows why starting in September gives you an advantage, and which steps to prioritise.
Why September Is a Good Time to Start
Between choosing an institution and course, gathering documentation, applying for an offer of admission, paying tuition, and finally applying for the visa, the whole process can take several months. Starting 4-5 months ahead (instead of 1 or 2) gives you room to handle unexpected issues without the pressure of a looming deadline.
Recent Visa Policy Changes to Keep in Mind
On 17 September 2026, the Australian government announced a series of changes to student migration policy. These changes are not yet in effect, but they're worth keeping in mind as you plan for the February 2027 intake:
Restrictions on bringing family members: new applicants for the Student (subclass 500) and Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visas will no longer be able to automatically include a partner or dependents in their application. Possible exceptions were mentioned for PhD students and for nationals of Pacific and ASEAN countries, though the full official detail hasn't been published yet.
Course progression, upward only: if you're planning to transfer between courses, you'll only be able to move up the qualification level (for example, from a bachelor's to a master's), not the other way around. Extensions for legitimate reasons remain possible.
Stricter financial checks: the government announced closer scrutiny of applicants' financial capacity, with emphasis on showing you can afford your studies without relying on income from work in Australia.
As of this publication, no exact commencement dates have been confirmed, and the government has said that families already in Australia on a student partner visa won't be separated. This is exactly why starting your process now, under the current rules, gives you more room to manoeuvre if bringing a partner or dependents is part of your plan, or if your plan depends on a course transfer.
This is general educational information only. Always check official sources from the Department of Home Affairs or seek advice from a qualified professional for your specific situation.
Step 1: Define Your Goal Before the Course
Before looking for courses, define what you want to achieve: entering the job market quickly with a practical skill, obtaining a specific qualification, or working towards a particular migration pathway? This clarity avoids choosing a course just because it "sounds good" and ends up not getting you where you actually want to go.
Step 2: Choose Institution and Course
With your goal clear, compare recognised institutions (verified on CRICOS) that offer the course you're looking for, also considering the city where you'll study and its cost of living.
Step 3: Gather Your Documentation Early
Academic, financial documents, and your Genuine Student statement all take time to prepare properly, especially if you need official translations or sponsorship letters. Leaving this for the last month is one of the most common causes of rushed, error-prone applications.
Step 4: Apply for Your Offer of Admission
Once your documentation is ready, you can formally apply to your chosen institution. Response times vary, so applying early gives you room to adjust if needed.
Step 5: Pay Tuition and Apply for the Visa
With your offer of admission (Confirmation of Enrolment) in hand, you pay the corresponding tuition and proceed with your student visa application, which also has its own processing times.
What Happens If You Start Late
It's not impossible with less time, but each step becomes tighter, and any unexpected issue (a document that takes longer than expected, a needed correction) can put your travel date at risk. Starting in September for a February intake gives you the margin a last-minute process doesn't have.
In Summary
Early planning isn't just a general recommendation: it's what lets you handle unexpected issues without them turning into a crisis. If February is your goal, September is the best time to take the first step.
