In Australia you can study English, a vocational course (VET) or a university degree. Here's who each option suits and how to choose based on your goal, budget and timeline.

Whether you're writing to us from Latin America, Asia or Europe, one of the first questions we hear is: "What should I study?" The answer depends on your goal, not on what your friend studied or what you saw online. Here are the three main options.
1. English Courses (ELICOS)
Intensive English courses at registered institutions. They suit you if you need to improve your level before a vocational or university course, or if learning the language is your main goal. Many students combine them with a follow-on course (a "package").
Right for you if: your English level doesn't yet meet the entry requirement for your target course, or you want a first experience in Australia before committing to a longer programme.
2. Vocational Education (VET)
Practical certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas in areas such as business, marketing, hospitality, construction, IT and early childhood education. They tend to be shorter and focused on job-ready skills.
Right for you if: you want hands-on training, you already have work experience and want to update it, or you need a more controlled budget.
3. University (Higher Education)
Includes bachelor's, graduate certificates, master's and doctoral degrees. This is the path if you need a recognised university qualification or want to go deeper academically in your field.
Right for you if: your career requires a degree, you already hold a bachelor's and want to specialise, or your profession requires university-level study.
How to Decide: 3 Key Questions
What is your 2-3 year goal?
Work in your field, a career change, academic specialisation.
What is your English level today?
This decides whether you start with English or go straight in.
What is your real budget? I
nclude tuition, living costs, health insurance and the visa.
A Common Mistake
Choosing a course only for its price or because "someone said it was easy". A course that doesn't connect with your academic and work history can raise questions in your visa application, because the Genuine Student requirement assesses whether your choice makes sense.
In Summary
No path is better than another: there's the path that fits your goal. Defining that first saves you time, money and stress.
This is general educational information only. Always check official sources or seek advice from a qualified professional for your situation.
